Foldia Light

Creating value through a more meaningful product experience

Foldia shows how value and differentiation can emerge in a saturated market when form and function are connected into one meaningful experience. The story goes beyond a marketing claim and becomes something people can directly experience, interact with and live with.

At a glance

Opportunity

In a crowded lighting market, the challenge was to create distinction through a deeper layer of meaning. How could another lighting solution among many have a genuine reason to exist?

Solution

A kinetic lamp that creates a richer emotional and practical experience. Inspired by nature, it delivers a functional lighting benefit through a surprisingly simple, transforming form that invites direct interaction and becomes a distinctive part of the interior.

Impact

Foldia was developed into a finished product and introduced to the market. Its concept attracted attention for the way it combines material, movement and light, and it was featured in a national TV segment on contemporary Slovenian wood design.

When nature inspires behaviour, not just form

Early in the project, I looked to nature for a way to give the product more meaning. At first it was just mimicking, borrowing shapes from plants. But it felt too superficial. The turning point came with nastic movement, the way plants physically respond to external stimuli such as light.

This opened up the new field of possibility - a moving lamp. But I did not want movement to be a gimmick either. It still needed to serve a real purpose, so I started exploring how transformation could change the experience of light.

Opening and closing, direct light and indirect light

Through a series of paper mockups, one form revealed a useful relationship between shape and light. When the lamp closes, the light becomes softer and more ambient. When it opens, more direct light is released.

There is no need to change the experience electronically, with a distance. It creates direct interaction with the object, touching the material, transforming the ambient through transforming the product.

Form, material and function become one seamless solution

The final form is very simple but intriguing. A single strip of wood veneer, twisted and connected through an axis. Its flexibility allows the lamp to transform, while the same material brings warmth and natural character into the interior.

There is no separate mechanism added to create the interaction. The changing form itself controls the light. Material, movement, form and lighting function become one idea, giving the aesthetic concept a purpose and turning a product into a more complete experience.
